Welcome to Alberto Cappellaro

Dr. Alberto Cappellaro has just joined the group as an IST fellow. Here is how Alberto describes his way here:

I was born, raised and educated in Padova, an Italian city on the west of Venice and south of Prosecco hills, mostly famous for its University, one of the oldest in the whole of Europe. There, under the supervision of Prof. Luca Salasnich I got my Master’s degree (2014) and a Phd in Physics (2018), working mostly with the theory of many-body quantum states. A great share of my research effort has been devoted to cold atoms (one of the most exciting setup ever) and their self-bound states (droplets, solitons, filaments and so on). More recently I got interested in (quantum) hydrodynamics and the old issue of sound propagation, but revisited for quantum fluids.

After the first postdoctoral appointment in Italy, in February 2021 I joined the group of Prof. Lemeshko, fascinated by their scientific quests at the boundary between molecular physics, condensed matter and the theory of open quantum systems. Besides cold atoms and fluctuating fields, I enjoy my free time playing (and talking about) basketball and football, reading crime novels and watching TV series (Twin Peaks above all)

Misha Lemeshko elected to the Young Academy of the Austrian Academy of Sciences

The Young Academy consists of up to 70 already established young scientists from various disciplines who have excelled in their fields. Its goal is to promote scientific exchange and thus to enable innovative research. “I grew up as a scientist in a physics bubble. At IST, I have the great opportunity to talk to biologists, mathematicians, and chemists, but I never had much contact with the humanities. I’m looking forward to being able to exchange ideas with humanities researchers from now on because I have no idea how they think and approach scientific problems,” says Mikhail Lemeshko.

Welcome to Lorant Szegedy

It’s a pleasure to welcome Lorant Szegedy as a joint postdoctoral fellow in the Lemeshko and Hausel groups. Here is how Lorant describes his way here:

I grew up in Budapest, where I also finished my Bachelor Degree in Physics. Then I went on to study Mathematical Physics at the University of Hamburg, where I obtained my PhD in Mathematics in 2018 under the supervision of Prof. Ingo Runkel. After finishing my PhD, I spent 6 months at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn and another year in Hamburg as a postdoc. At the beginning of 2020 moved to IST Austria as a  joint postdoctoral fellow in the groups of Prof. Mikhail Lemeshko and Prof. Tamas Hausel. I am interested in Mathematical Physics, in particular in low dimensional quantum field theories with defects, TQFTs, 2d CFTs, higher categories, quantum groups, moduli spaces and all sorts of Physics where these appear.
